π Part of: How to Prep for Anal β The Complete Guide
"What's your drill? I stop eating at 4P, trim and tidy up the body and beard, shower, clip nails, start drinking at home at 8P and hit the club about 10-11P." β a real r/askgaybros post asking everyone else's prep routine, February 2022
That guy has a checklist. Most people don't, which is why prep either gets skipped entirely or balloons into a 90-minute bathroom spiral. This page is the checklist β what to actually do at 24 hours, 2 hours, and 30 minutes out, and nothing you don't need.
One thing up front, because it changes everything else on this page: the goal is clean enough, not empty. Empty is a colon you punished. Clean enough is the realistic target, and it takes a lot less work than the internet implies.
The 60-second version
If your hookup is in two hours and you're reading this on the toilet, here's the whole thing:
- Light, simple food today. Nothing spicy, greasy, or high-fiber in the last few hours. You can't fix a week of bad eating in one cleanse, but you can avoid making it worse.
- One bulb of lukewarm water, two passes, done. Stop at three. Past that you're irritating tissue, not getting cleaner.
- Lube, then more lube. Silicone for partnered sex. Skip the high-osmolality bargain stuff.
- Pain is information, not a hurdle. Sharp pain means stop and adjust, not push through.
- A little mess is biology. Towel down. It happens to people who've done this for ten years.
That's the emergency version. The rest of this is the proper timeline, the part most guides bury under 1,500 words of douching technique.
The whole checklist on one screen
If you print one thing, print this. Each block links to the detail below it.
| When | Do | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days out | Daily soluble fiber (5g psyllium), steady water, normal meals | Crash diets, new foods you've never tried |
| 24 hours out | Lighter meals, 2-3L water, cut alcohol | Beans, raw veg, spicy food, heavy dairy |
| 2 hours out | Small simple meal (rice + egg), then stop eating | Coffee, fried food, anything that's burned you before |
| 30 minutes out | One bulb, lukewarm water, 1-2 passes, shower | Soap, salt, "cleansing solution," a 4th pass |
| During | Lube early and often, go slow for the first minute | Numbing creams, forcing through sharp pain |
| After | Pee, rinse with plain water, hydrate, soothing balm | Another round within 24h, a celebratory greasy meal |
Now the parts worth explaining.
7 days out: the part that does the heavy lifting
Here's the thing almost nobody wants to hear: the most useful prep happens the week before, not the hour before. The clearest version of this came from a 2018 thread where someone described spending "an hour and half" in the bathroom over-douching. The top reply (17 upvotes) was blunt: "You're douching WAY too much. One bulb of water plus a good shower should be it. Add psyllium husk to your diet⦠90 minutes is absurd. I'm done in 10 mins or less."
That's the whole trick. People who eat consistent soluble fiber need one quick pass. People who don't need three passes and an hour of anxiety. The difference isn't technique. It's stool consistency, and stool consistency is built over days, not minutes.
A lean-eating bottom on r/askgaybros put the flip side perfectly: "I eat very leanβ¦ no starchy carbs, which makes my poopoo very soft all the time. Douching for me is a whole process." Soft, loose stool is the enemy of clean prep. Soluble fiber firms it up. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found psyllium produces softer-but-more-formed, more predictable bowel movements at moderate doses (Aliment Pharmacol Ther, 2022) β which is exactly the texture that rinses clean in one pass instead of smearing through five.
So the 7-day block is short:
- 5g psyllium husk daily, same time, with a full glass of water.
- Steady hydration, roughly 2.5L a day.
- Eat normally and boringly. This is not the week to try a new pre-workout or go keto.
If you do nothing else on this page early, do the fiber. It's the single biggest lever, and it's the one our Colon Gentle Cleanse psyllium sachets exist to automate β single-ingredient psyllium, 5g a sachet, no aloe or sweeteners to upset things.
24 hours out: scale the food down
One day out, you're not adding work, you're removing variables. Whatever you eat now is roughly what you'll be cleansing tomorrow, give or take your own transit time.
Eat lighter and simpler. Cooked vegetables, lean protein, easy carbs like white rice or oatmeal. Keep the water up.
Cut these for the day:
- Beans, lentils, broccoli, cauliflower β fine most days, gas factories before play.
- Spicy food. The Reddit archives are full of "yesterday's hot pot caught up with me" stories for a reason.
- Heavy dairy, unless you already know yours is fine.
- Alcohol. This is the under-rated one. Two drinks the night before is a soft ceiling; past that you're dehydrated and your gut motility is unpredictable the next day.
You don't need to fast. Skipping meals slows your gut and dehydrates you, and it doesn't touch what's already in transit. Eat light, not nothing.
2 hours out: the last meal
This is where most guides get strict for no reason. You don't need a six-hour fast. You need one small, predictable meal and then a stop.
Safe picks: plain rice and a boiled egg, chicken broth with a few crackers, a banana, plain toast. Then stop eating. Coconut water or an electrolyte drink is fine and actually helps.
Skip in this window: coffee (it gets things moving at the worst time), fried or heavy food, raw veg, anything spicy, and β the universal rule β anything that has ever given you trouble before. Keep a private note on your phone. Most people repeat the same mistake three or four times before they start tracking it.
30 minutes out: the cleanse, kept short
Here's the part the internet over-complicates. We're going to keep it to a table, because that's all it needs to be.
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| 30 min | One bulb, ~250ml lukewarm tap water. Insert gently, release into the toilet. |
| 25 min | Second pass only if the first came back unclear. |
| 20 min | Third pass only if still unclear. Stop after three. |
| 15 min | Quick shower, plain water on the outside. No soap inside. |
| 5 min | Get dressed, sip water, pee one more time. |
Three rules carry the whole thing:
Lukewarm water, nothing else. No soap, no salt, no aloe, no mystery "cleansing solution." Plain water reaches what it needs to reach.
Low and shallow. A bulb, not a shower-head at full pressure. High pressure pushes water past the lower colon β upstream, into territory you can't fully clear, which is what triggers the watery mess later instead of preventing it. One experienced bottom described holding water too long and feeling it "work its way upstream," and that's the mechanism: the deeper and longer the water sits, the more your body treats it like something to flush.
Stop chasing perfect. Two clear-ish passes is clean enough. If pass three is still cloudy, that's your gut telling you today isn't the day β that's information, not failure. The 90-minute spiral starts exactly here, with "just one more to be sure."
There's a real health reason to keep it minimal, not just a comfort one. A 2018 cohort study of MSM on PrEP found that douching weekly or more often was associated with 3.6Γ the odds of rectal gonorrhea or chlamydia versus not douching, because aggressive, frequent rinsing strips the mucus layer that's part of your defense (Sex Transm Infect, 2018). Fewer, gentler cleanses protect that barrier. The fiber work above is what lets you cleanse less.
For the full bulb-vs-shower-vs-disposable breakdown, see our colon cleanse at home guide.
During: the first minute is the whole game
Prep doesn't end when he walks in. The most common reason anal hurts isn't size and isn't a bad cleanse β it's rushing the first sixty seconds.
The internal sphincter is smooth muscle. You can't flex it open the way you can the external one. It relaxes on its own in response to steady, gentle, low pressure, and it takes 30 to 60 seconds to fully let go (internal anal sphincter physiology review, 2013). Most people stop at ten seconds, hit resistance, and call themselves "too tight." You're not too tight. The muscle hasn't had time.
So: lube early, more than feels reasonable, and reapply. Go shallow and slow for the first minute. If there's sharp pain, that's the signal to pause and adjust the angle, not to push through.
One thing on lube brand, because it actually matters for the tissue: very high-osmolality water-based lubes can strip the rectal lining. A 2007 study showed hyperosmolar lubricants caused epithelial cell damage in the distal colon (J Infect Dis, 2007). Silicone-based lube has no water, so no osmolality problem β it's the safer default for partnered sex. If you stick with water-based, look for "iso-osmolar" on the label.
"Can I just douche and skip all this?"
Worth answering head-on, because the community itself argues about it. On one 2024 thread, a new bottom asked exactly this. One reply (6 upvotes) said "Douching is enough. Fiber just makes it easier to clean up." The higher-voted reply (19 upvotes) pushed back: "it's not that douching isn't enough, it's that a high-fiber diet will help you not have to rely on douching so much."
Both are sort of right, and that's the honest answer. Can you get clean enough with douching alone, on a given night? Often, yes. Should you rely on it as your whole system? No β because the people who do are the ones in the bathroom for 90 minutes, doing the fifth and sixth pass, stripping the barrier the 2018 study warns about. Douching handles tonight. Diet handles whether tonight is easy or a fight.
If you're brand new and tonight is the night, douche gently and keep it short. Then start the fiber this week so the next time is the 10-minute version, not the 90-minute one.
When to skip prep entirely
Some nights the answer is "not tonight," and knowing them is the experienced move:
- Active fissure or flaring hemorrhoids. Every cleanse re-irritates the tear and resets healing. Skip cleansing, up the soluble fiber so stool passes painlessly, and don't bottom on top of it.
- A stomach bug or active diarrhea. Your gut is already purging. Cleansing on top strips an already-stripped lining and dehydrates you.
- You cleansed in the last 24 hours. Don't stack a second one. The mucus layer needs 24-48 hours to recover. If today went badly, push the sex, don't cleanse harder.
When it's a doctor visit, not a prep problem
Most post-sex discomfort is minor and settles on its own. A few things aren't, and prep won't fix them:
- Bleeding that's more than a faint streak, drips into the toilet, or won't stop.
- Diarrhea lasting more than two days, or with fever, or with signs of dehydration. The NHS guidance on diarrhoea and vomiting lays out exactly when watery output crosses into "see a clinician."
- Sharp pain that's still there a day later, or pain on every bowel movement.
None of that is a cleansing-technique issue. That's a "talk to a doctor" issue, and there's no shame in it.

Make the next time the 10-minute version
The whole point of a checklist is that it gets shorter the more you run it. The variable that shrinks the timeline isn't a fancier bulb β it's the daily fiber and a settled gut. That's the system we built our products around, and it's why this article's CTA is the full kit rather than one bottle.
